I was able to remove and replace keycaps on a 2006-era Thinkpad, but later computers have had far more fragile keycaps and plastic bits. Whenever I've pulled off a key cap on a newer laptop, either the plastic clips on the key caps themselves break, or the plastic bits that attach it to the keyboard break.
