Yeah, in the old days charging and data are seperate lines. The GBA took batteries and had a link cable port, as did all previous models in the line. The SP added a rechargable battery and as such it needed another port to charge. It also pulls double duty as the audio out port with a dongle since the SP doesn't have a built-in headphone jack.
