Personally, don't be a mercenary, and don't become a vassal for Swadia. The king is pretty crap at keeping a kingdom and doesn't really treat vassals that good. Just work a independent chappy, doing quests for lords until they actually want you to become a vassal. Being a mercenary allows me to loot villages with impunity though.

Being a mercenary allows you to fight for a kingdom, but it doesn’t mean that you’re a lord of that kingdom. With each battle and other activities that you take on for the kingdom, you’ll earn renown and influence. The more you fight, the better known you’ll become, and that’s the key to becoming a Vassal. Why can't I be a mercenary ?? I know that to become a merc in warband, the faction must be at war and you need to have high relationship with lords. I'm trying to be a merc for Swadia, and it's at war with Nords, Vaegirs and Khergits. My relationship with the Swadia lords is : Count Grainwad 33. Count Tredian 22. Count Clais 11.
HR: 32. Once your renown is high enough, you will be able to join factions of your choice. Also after a while you will start receiving messages of lords wanting you to become their vassal. Also, there is an option to join a faction as a mercenary. You will get paid for your services while serving a kingdom.
